Waste
Waste is produced from airport, administrative and retail operations. Licensed waste carriers remove waste from the site in accordance with the most recent waste legislation.
Our Policy
GBBCA will endeavour to minimise waste, and the cost of waste management, through the encouragement of cost effective recycling and re-charging of full waste management costs to business partners, where applicable.
Objectives & Targets
Our objective is to improve waste management practices to minimise waste, increase recycling and prevent pollution. For the period 2010-11 GBBCA aims to:
• At least maintain recycling rates achieved in 2010.
• Seek to reduce waste focusing on paper consumption.
Waste Initiatives
• Recycling facilities: have been introduced for passengers, business partners and staff to recycle a range of waste materials on-site including plastic bottles, containers and packaging and aluminium and metal cans and tins.
Monitoring: GBBCA records and monitors waste management data to assess progress with its recycling scheme. In addition, GBBCA organises regular meetings with its business partners to promote the cost benefits of recycling and to give feedback on progress with the scheme.
Our Performance
Recycling has gone from 0% in 2003 and accounted for 45% of total waste generated in 2010. Recycling rates increased 14% from 2009. The year 2009 also saw 41% less waste produced than in 2005, with waste per passenger falling from 0.23 kilos to 0.11 kilos. However, as a result of the reconfiguration project and an increase in retail space, waste volumes per passenger increased to 0.16 kilos in 2010.
